The Top Three(3) Pet Supermarkets in the U.S.

  • by

Pet parents in the United States have it pretty good when it comes to finding quality pet food and products, but there’s still no substitute for getting the real-deal pet food from the source itself – their local pet supermarket. Most people wouldn’t consider the experience of buying their dog or cat food from Wal-Mart or Target, but that doesn’t mean that pet supermarkets aren’t great places to pick up high-quality dog and cat food at lower prices. Here are five of our favorite pet supermarkets in the United States:

Pet Supplies USA

In our survey, respondents who mentioned a pet supermarket gave Pet Supplies USA an average rating of 6.5 out of 10, with 8 being extremely satisfied and 1 being dissatisfied enough to never shop there again. The company also had an average score for satisfaction with its delivery service at 5.9 out of 10 on a scale from 0 to 10, with 8 being extremely satisfied and 0 indicating dissatisfaction.

The first pet supermarket is located in Phoenix, Arizona and was founded by PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., which originated as a mail-order business specializing in aquarium fish and tropical fish food. Since its inception, PETCO has grown to include 1266 stores across North America with revenues of more than $4 billion annually.

Best known for selling pet supplies, pet foods and grooming services, Petsmart has more than 1,300 locations and $9 billion in annual revenue worldwide. The company was founded by James Myers (now CEO) and his wife, Dorothy Schoellkopf-Myers in 1982 after a trip to Europe where they saw how easily pets were able to get regular care. Today, many stores offer full veterinary facilities for pets that need routine checkups or emergency care.

Best pet hospitals:

Banfield Pet Hospital

Founded in 1955, Banfield is a national pet hospital chain with more than 750 locations—and growing—across North America. The privately held company has an estimated $1 billion in annual revenue and serves more than 4 million pets annually, which means it’s likely your vet clinic is owned by Banfield or is at least licensed to use their brand name and systems.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners

Located in Lakewood, Colorado, BluePearl Veterinary Partners is a leading veterinary emergency hospital with 24 locations across 12 states. The company was founded more than 10 years ago and has since built itself into one of North America’s largest providers of emergency and specialty care for pets. It offers a full range of services from animal medical to pet hospice care and its hospital facilities are equipped with everything from ultrasound machines to CT scanners.
